NEWS LITERACY WORKSHOP A DISTRACTION FROM THE COLLAPSE
THE ILLUSION OF THE INFORMED CITIZEN
Local groups staged workshops about news literacy. They gathered people to teach them how to spot falsehoods. This entire charade misses the fundamental point. The problem is not a deficit in attention or intellect. The problem is the decaying architecture supporting modern information.
These seminars frame the problem as a personal failure to learn. They imply that mastering source vetting or algorithmic bias will grant immunity. This is merely the desperate PR bandage applied over systemic collapse. The media landscape is not broken because the public is incapable. It is broken because the profit model demands engagement over truth.
The supposed decay of truth is not a natural occurrence. It is a manufactured byproduct of ad revenue streams. We are being coached to distrust our own senses. The supposed lessons only illuminate the depressingly predictable nature of this information diet.
- The active incentivization of outrage.
- The rampant commodification of outrage.
- The algorithmic preference for conflict.
This setup forces the public to become unpaid digital forensic experts just to maintain a shred of reality. It is exhausting labor with no professional reward or recourse. The institutions responsible for information dissemination cannot afford to be neutral anymore. Neutrality generates zero clicks.
We are told that the goal is simply to filter the endless noise. But that noise is not water. It is a slurry of optimized garbage designed solely to keep eyeballs glued to the screen. The decay is complete. The spectacle is the only constant left standing.
